A. JOB SUMMARY
To provide training in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) to students, faculty, and staff, enabling effective communication with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in healthcare and community settings, thereby promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
B. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Plan and deliver Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) courses at various proficiency levels (basic to intermediate).
• Develop and deliver specialized modules focusing on medical and healthcare-related KSL vocabulary and communication strategies.
• Conduct practical sessions to develop students’ expressive and receptive signing skills.
• Assess students’ signing proficiency through continuous assessment and practical examinations.
• Prepare students for certification examinations by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) or other relevant bodies.
• Advise the institute on matters of accessibility and inclusivity for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
• Organize and facilitate interactions between students and the Deaf community to enhance practical learning and cultural sensitivity.
C. REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT
1. A Diploma or Higher Diploma in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) or Sign Language Interpretation from a recognized institution. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field will be an added advantage.
2. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in teaching KSL or working as a Sign Language interpreter, preferably in an educational or healthcare setting.
3. Proficiency in KSL at an advanced level with demonstrated experience in medical/healthcare terminology.
4. A TVET Trainers Methodology Certificate (from CDACC or equivalent) is mandatory. Candidates without it must commit to undertaking the training within the first year of employment.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture and the ability to foster an inclusive learning environment.
6. Registration with the Kenya Sign Language Interpreters Association (KSLIA) or a similar professional body will be a distinct advantage.
